We are delighted to offer two free weekly classes for veterans. These classes build on the private program that was offered to veterans for the past six years. Any veteran or active duty military is welcome.
Mindful Yoga for Veterans: Mondays 1-2pm with Jessica Blanchard (biweekly), Seneca Hennrich (monthly), Reyna Hernandez (monthly)
These classes are based on the protocol that Jessica developed with other mental health specialists during her six years teaching veterans with Post Traumatic Stress (PTS). The classes combine breathing, mindful movement, and guided rest. The overall effect is calming of the sympathetic nervous system which causes the “fight or flight” response. This type of yoga helps with basic grounding and self regulation, as well as a better ability to cope with stress. Yoga also helps with other common issues veterans face, including anxiety, depression and insomnia.
Veterans Yoga Project: Mindful Yoga for Veterans: Wednesdays 9:30- 11am with Michael Sevin
Michael’s years as a student, then as a teacher of the above mentioned Mindful Yoga for Veterans drew him to the Veterans Yoga Project (VYP). Dr Daniel Libby’s years of study, and ongoing research into trauma, Post Traumatic Distress (PTS), and the benefits of yoga as a grounding process for people with trauma and PTS is well documented. Dr Libby’s Mindful Resilience Yoga (MRY) is a yoga method designed to maximize these benefits. The Mindful Resilience Yoga for Veterans classes are much the same as the MIndful Yoga for Veterans described above, with more education into PTS. These classes show how PTS can interfere with daily life, and how MRY can have a grounding - calming effect for those with PTS. This grounding reduces the interference that PTS has on daily life.
