Gua Sha & Face Workshop
Thursday August 1st, 6-7pm

During this 60 minute class we will focus on releasing tension in the head and face, utilizing a gua sha tool, face yoga, and a few full-body restorative postures.  You will need to bring your own gua sha tool and come to class with your face freshly cleansed without makeup or heavy lotions.  

Did you know the face has over 40 muscles of expression?  These muscles and the connective tissue around them are often overlooked or left out in yoga classes or bodywork sessions, even though they are used constantly.  Not only do we use these muscles to communicate and express feeling, we also use them when we focus, exert energy, or when we're stressed.  Daily activities such as screen usage and driving can easily overwork the muscles of the head and face, causing tension headaches and making relaxation and restful sleep more difficult to obtain.  

Gua sha is traditionally a Chinese medicinal technique in which a smooth stone or wooden tool is used to scrape the skin in order to bring on regenerative properties.  In recent years it has become popular is the US, often used more lightly across the muscles of the face to bring about circulation.  In this class I'll offer a different approach to using a gua sha tool from a Rolfing Structural Integration perspective.  We will also explore some fun face yoga techniques, some breathing practices, and a few gentle full body yoga postures leaving you feeling rejuvenated and whole.

Rolf Movement is gentle movement therapy. During this class you will be led through movement sequences with verbal and hands-on cues. Please come prepared for class wearing clothes that are comfortable to move in. Some examples of movements we'll explore are the tilt of our pelvis, the rotation of our shoulder joints, and the flexion and extension of our spine. During Rolf Movement we are working towards gaining awareness of the subtle actions that are occuring in the body such as bracing or "tightness" and to discover easier more efficient ways of moving, standing, and sitting. We are also working on discovering the potential for movement that we have but is often inaccessible due to habitual ways of operating. Each week of this 4-class series we will focus on a different area of the body and I encourage people to take all four classes, as each class builds on top of the other.

Hips & Legs - Aug. 8th
Shoulders & Arms - Aug. 15th
Head & Neck - Aug. 22nd
Spine & Core - Aug. 29th
